Founded in 1425, the Université Catholiqe de Louvain (UCLouvain) is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Erasmus, Mercator, Vesalius are some of the personalities who frequented it. Georges Lemaître formulated his theory of the Big Bang there and Christian de Duve won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1974.
The Higher Institute of Philosophy (ISP) is currently the entity at the Université Catholique de Louvain that manages research in philosophy. It is one of the research institutes of the Human Sciences Sector. It was founded in 1889 by Désiré Mercier. Dedicated to dialogue with other fields of thought and knowledge, the great tradition of research in philosophy at UCLouvain has contributed in the past and continues to contribute today to contemporary debate in philosophy. The Higher Institute of Philosophy pursues its mission in a spirit of openness to other scientific disciplines, to society, and to other cultures and histories of thought. In this way, it strives to contribute to the progress of thought in today's world.
Since its founding in the 1960s by Jean Ladrière, CEFISES, the Center for the Philosophy of Science and Society at the Université Catholique de Louvain, has been one of the leading centers in Europe for the study of the philosophy of the natural and formal sciences.
For 90 years, the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique F.R.S.-FNRS has contributed to the development of fundamental research in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation through its policy of promoting scientific excellence and supporting researchers.
